Apply Water Slide Decals Without Silvering Using Mark Softer

Water slide decals can transform a Gundam from a clean plastic kit into a convincing machine, but even excellent markings can look poor when trapped air remains underneath. The cloudy, metallic-looking edge known as silvering usually comes from applying a decal to a rough or dusty surface.

Mark Softer helps the decal conform to panel lines, curves and small surface details. It is a decal-softening solution rather than a substitute for preparation, so the best results come from combining it with a smooth gloss coat, careful positioning and controlled drying time.

This approach works for Real Grade, Master Grade and High Grade kits, whether you are building in a Melbourne flat during winter or dealing with Queensland humidity. A patient process is especially useful when replacement decals are expensive or take time to arrive from Australian hobby retailers.

Stage Product or tool Main purpose
Surface preparation Gloss clear coat Creates a smooth base and reduces trapped air
Decal placement Warm water and tweezers Releases and positions the marking safely
Decal conforming Mark Softer and cotton bud Helps the decal settle into detail
Final protection Satin or gloss clear coat Seals the decal and evens the finish

Prepare The Surface Before Decalling

Silvering is easiest to prevent before the decal touches the model. Apply a thin, even gloss clear coat over the area and allow it to cure fully. A smooth finish gives the decal film fewer microscopic gaps where air can collect. Matte plastic, sanding scratches and fingerprints are common causes of cloudy edges.

Wash your hands, clean the workbench and remove dust from the kit with a soft brush. In dry Adelaide conditions, static can pull lint towards freshly coated parts, while a damp Brisbane or Gold Coast day can lengthen curing times. Work in a ventilated space and follow the instructions for your chosen lacquer, acrylic or enamel product.

Cut And Position Each Decal Carefully

Cut close to the printed marking without slicing through the design. Excess carrier film increases the visible edge and gives air more room to remain underneath. Place the decal in lukewarm water for a few seconds, then rest it on a damp tile or palette until it begins to slide from the backing paper.

Brush a small amount of clean water onto the model, then move the marking into position with a fine brush. Avoid dragging it with tweezers, which can stretch or crease thin decals. Blot the surrounding water with a corner of paper towel or a cotton bud, rolling rather than rubbing across the decal.

At this stage, the marking should be flat but may still sit over raised detail. Check alignment under a bright lamp before applying Mark Softer. If you participate in the Gundam Eclipse community, sharing a close-up of this stage can help other builders identify positioning problems before the decal is sealed.

Use Mark Softer In Small Amounts

Once the decal is correctly placed and excess water has been removed, touch Mark Softer over the entire marking with a fine brush. Use enough to wet the decal without flooding the surrounding panel. The solution softens the film so it can settle over rivets, vents and recessed lines.

Do not move the decal after Mark Softer has been applied. Wrinkles may appear temporarily as the film reacts to the solution; this is normal. Leave the part alone until completely dry, often for several hours or overnight. Trying to flatten a softened decal with a cotton bud can tear it or push it out of alignment.

For stubborn curves, apply a second light coat after the first has dried. On a large shoulder armour piece, work in sections rather than covering everything at once. Mark Softer is relatively easy to find through Australian hobby shops such as Hobbyco or Metro Hobbies, although imported brands and replacement sheets may cost more after postage.

Fix Silvering And Protect The Finish

If a decal has already silvered, carefully prick the affected area with a very sharp hobby needle. Apply a tiny amount of Mark Softer and press gently with a clean, damp cotton bud. This can draw the solution beneath the film and reduce the cloudy appearance, though badly damaged decals may need replacing.

Inspect the model under angled light before sealing it. Small bubbles can sometimes be corrected, but aggressive rubbing usually makes the damage worse. Once every marking is dry, spray a compatible clear coat in light passes. A gloss coat preserves a bright mechanical finish, while satin is often a good choice for military-style Gundam builds.

Allow the clear coat to cure in a dust-free area. In Melbourne’s cooler months, drying can be slower, so rushing the next layer may trap moisture or leave fingerprints. A final topcoat also protects panel lining and gives the whole model a consistent sheen.

Build A Reliable Decal Routine

A repeatable process matters more than using a large amount of setting solution. Test the decal paper and clear coat on a spare shield, runner piece or old kit first. Different manufacturers use different carrier films, and some markings react quickly to softening fluid.

Keep a small kit of tools nearby: a sharp blade, fine brushes, pointed tweezers, cotton buds, a water dish and a lint-free cloth. Australian builders ordering online should check whether products are shipped domestically, especially when aerosol clear coats are restricted for transport. Local availability can affect which finishing system is practical.

For clean results, follow these recommendations:

  • Apply a fully cured gloss coat before placing water slide decals.
  • Use lukewarm water and remove excess moisture before Mark Softer.
  • Touch on a thin layer of solution instead of flooding the part.
  • Leave softened decals untouched until they have dried completely.
  • Seal the finished markings with light coats of compatible clear.

Keep progress photos and record which brand of decal paper, gloss coat and softening solution you used. The forum announcements can help you stay aware of community events, build features and site news where techniques and finished work are shared.

With preparation, restraint and enough drying time, Mark Softer can make water slide decals settle into panel lines with minimal silvering. Post your completed build in the Display Case on Gundam Eclipse, and share the steps that helped you achieve a clean, durable finish.
